It’s a strange time for the independant musician at the moment: the global financial collapse has meant that people generally don”t have the money available to spend on entertainment that they had before. In addition, the rise of file swapping programs has led to a loss in revenue for all musicians. The fact is that the whole ‘rich and famous’ ethos which was once part of the entire concept of becoming a famous musician has seperated the men from the boys in the respect that only those with a real calling to make music for it’s own sake will continue to do so, regardless of finacial reward. Live work is one way that today’s musician can make a living, however in the face of the smoking ban that forbids customers from smoking inside clubs and pubs plus the aforementioned economic crisis has led to fewer and fewer gigs being available for bands at the lower end of the scale. There’s no easy answer. My approach has been to keep plugging away, promoing my songs on the Internet, following what a famous musician once referred to as that ‘ blind Bethlehem star’, in the hope that something will eventually give. There have been a lot of let-downs and disappointments for me as I have progressed through the minefield of the music business (whatever that actually is these days) and yet despite it all, the urge to continue to make music is unstoppable within me. Anyone who is similarly afflicted will know what I am talking about!
